THE BAND
Having written a bunch of songs, the next thing Ario Hendarwan needed to do was form a band. Fortunately, he was a student at the Jakarta Institute of Arts where it wasn’t too hard to find like-minded peers. And so The Adams was formed in 2002, soon establishing themselves in the local independent music scene thanks to their combination of catchy tunes, sweet harmonies, loud guitars and heartfelt lyrics.
The band gained acclaim and a packed touring schedule via their 2005 debut album The Adams and its 2006 follow-up V2.05. Activity slowed down with each member busy with their individual lives, but the band still resurfaced for the occasional gig such as opening for Bloc Party in 2013.
The advent of streaming and social media enabled a new generation to discover The Adams, which rebuilt momentum that led to the 2019 release of third album Agterplaas. The Adams reached new heights to become one of Indonesia’s most in-demand indie rock bands that even enabled them to perform onstage with one of their influences, Weezer, in 2022. 2024 saw The Adams further expanding their musical horizons by collaborating with hip-hop artist Basboi and EDM producer Dipha Barus.
It’s a testament to the enduring quality of The Adams’ music that they’ve come so far from their humble origins on campus and are still around two decades later. Expect more surprises from them in 2025.
